Reflections on Christian Science Nursing

The following article is adapted from an essay written by Martha, one of our newest student Christian Science nurses. We share this in hope that you will catch a glimpse of the ongoing spiritual renewal and invigoration among our staff and their deepening understanding of Christian Science nursing.

Christian Science teaches that we are spiritual beings first and foremost, not simply humans made from matter who coincide with a physical body. This is a doctrine that, in itself, reveals and mends the relationship between God and us.

As Christian Science nurses, we bear witness to the healing that obviously takes place because of God’s divine work. This bestows on us the responsibility of not just catering to the physical needs of others, but doing our work so we may not hinder their spiritual work. And so we help them along where we can. Through our work as Christian Science nurses, we reflect God’s caring presence. We continue to show the world that healing will always be about recognizing the unbroken relationship between us and God, as Truth transcends all material conditions.

I have loved learning the history of our Cause and movement. It has been fascinating to see how divine guidance has delivered and defended Christian Science nurses during times of trials and tribulations. It’s fair to say that these current times are a result of the faith that the workers who joined Mrs. Eddy in this movement expressed and held unto. We are the fruits of their labor.

I have come to recognize how Christian Science nursing has been flexible throughout time, while remaining grounded in Truth. I admire how our workers have adjusted wisely and readily to external circumstances that are almost continuously in states of transition. I am also comforted by the unchanging continuity of being that the Science of Christ reveals.
